Mika

Life in Cartoon Motion, Casablanca/Universal

By Einstein

Lebanese-born Euro pop star Mika (Michael Penniman) is holding ambiguity tightly in his hands as his Freddie Mercury vocal gymnastics and pop star looks make their way into ipods across the pond. But for many, the question is this; will Mika successfully swim to this side of the pond, or will he drown on the way over?

Well, considering he punctured Billboard’s Hot 100, he’s almost here. Life in Cartoon Motion, the debut which spawned the British number one hit “Grace Kelly,” is fueled by the saccharine ingredients of shaking baritones and soaring falsettos, undeniable pop hooks, classic rock pianos ala Elton, and traditional 70’s power pop. A classically trained background in voice and theatre validates it all, as does his upper-class gypsy lifestyle being raised in Paris and London. In other words, Mika’s that good-looking theatre kid you knew whom everything came easy to.

“Billy Brown” boasts of a “bromance” while “Lollipop” explains that “love’s gonna let you down.” “Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)” pays lyrical tribute to Mika’s idol the late Freddie Mercury, while “Ring Ring” is simply about a “chicken caller” (American slang for someone who phones another and hangs up). "Relax (Take It Easy)" is a foot-stomping disco party, which anatomically lifts your hands in the air.

Mika is young, fresh, and happily riding the wave of ambiguity in the wake of those like NY’s Scissor Sisters. And the simple truth is this; Mika is fabulous whether or not you can appreciate a strapping young lad with the voice of a girl.
