Cansei De Ser Sexy

Sub Pop

By Faith-Ann Young

The Brazilian sextet, Cansei De Ser Sexy, which translates to "Tired of Being Sexy" in Portuguese, invades all corners of the music conscience this summer with its blend of cheeky rock electronica, followed loyally by prides of merry, skinny-jean-wearing hipsters. It's not that CSS makes revolutionary music and it's not that their band members, either the 5 girls or 1 boy drummer, are incredibly sexy.

But CSS crafts an easy mix of feverish 'indie electronic' dance music, matched with nonchalant, saucy persona, which in the heat of summer is down-right addictive. The lead singer, Lovefoxxx, has Blondie's vivacious attitude with the fury of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's Karen O. While the lyrics don't require too much thought or interpretation (case in point: written in English, example titles include "Music is my hot, hot sex," "Alcohol," and "Meeting Paris Hilton,") LoveFoxxx sings with sass, nerve, and braggadocio. As displayed on their self-titled Album Cansei de Ser Sexy ~ CSS, the result weds CSS to the tight-knit squad of angry, sexy, screaming female hipster icons like Peaches, Chicks on Speed, or Uffie.

CSS's climb to international success is emblematic of the shifting tides of the recording industry and online media. Though the only one of the band members who has musical experience is the token male drummer, the band experimented in their families' Sao Paolo basements until they created a cogent beat. However, once they debuted their brash robotic synthetic style on the internet, using Brazil's popular photolog's and Trauma Virtual- Brazil's equivalent to Myspace, their music and distinct cheeky style won them a record deal with Trama Virtual's label, a rare achievement offered to only two bands total thus far. The rest of their rock-fairytale flows like Redbull into Vodka- CSS signed with Seattle-based label Sub Pop in 2006 and established international credence touring with DJ Diplo in Europe that year.

At the Coachella Music Festival in May 2007, cars were spray-painted with "CSS RULES!" and as hipsters pulsed within CSS's jam-packed tent, Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton bopped on either side of the stage. Icing on the neon-hued cake, CSS recently announced that after their summer concert touring ends, they will join Gwen Stefani on her European Tour this September. Indeed, if the fairy-tale continues to maintain its frenetic, cocaine-quick evolution, the chapter in 2008 may include a name change to 'Tired Of Being So God-Damn Popular.'
